Did you know that 48 million people in the United States get sick from a food borne illness each year? Of those who get sick, an estimated 128,000 are hospitalized with 3,000 losing their lives.
While anyone can get sick from foodborne illnesses, for some individuals it can be very serious.
- Adults aged 65 or older
- Children younger than 5
- People with weakened immune systems (such as, people with diabetes, liver or kidney disease, alcoholism, or HIV, or people who receive chemotherapy or radiation therapy)
- Pregnant women
Because of these statistics, September has been designated as Food Safety Education Month.
